I paid...A LOT. At first the car was super quiet, I was in awe. After 5 passes at the track... the whining made its return.

Did you do your 5 passes with your CHE axle brace installed (and with axle tubes welded)??

In '07 I paid:

$600 labor
$300 in parts (included gear set, bearings, seals)

Whine was only noticeable when coasting and through a certain RPM range, not constant. It didn't bother me.

Seems right. How do I like the 4.10s?
-J
I love them... everyone in the forum talked me into 3:73 for the 13/14 cars so I did that at first and hated them...IMO 3:73 are all wrong for the car so I changed them to 4:10's...for me, the 4:10's are the perfect gear for the 13/14 GT500's...keep in mind I run a 28.7" tire in the rear...Anyway I still can run over 40mph in 1st and opening it up for the 3rd to 4th shift is awesome!

As mentioned by some above....410's vote for me on my '13 as well.
I always had taller MT 305's so my gears were effected.
I had the 373's ( actual 363's) out of the box with VMP Stage 4 650rw...WHINE!
Went to new 4.10's...broke them in right... NO WHINE.....Go Figure.
Then after a mod to 680rw was convinced by a shop to go to new 373's.
Again broke them in for 500 miles...3-4 stabs on the gas and 373 WHINE !
Plus...honestly ? I felt the car's burst into boost...especially in 3rd gear rolling onto a highway was boring.
I had another shop install my "used 4.10's" back in the car in 2015...680 rw range ...used gears NO WHINE. Since then I've modded up in power and simply LOVE the gear. With taller tires the 410 = 390 combo is awesome.
* I would recommend always swapping the bearings on each gear change.

You nailed it meaning once you're used to the pull of 4.10s other gears aren't enough off boost and normal driving.
Makes the car feel much lighter and punchy with the mechanical advantage.
Now my engine is built with cams and peaks at 7000-7200 the 4.10s have still been fine alllwing a 71-7200 trap at 145mph

So whine is definitely an issue. I have a whine in the passenger seat already so don’t want to add another irritation to my pleasure rides.

Besides costs, what is the downside to just going 9 inch Moser? I mean, by the time you change gears, weld tubes and whatever else but still not happy; prefer to do it right the first time.

I would suggest anyone wanting to drag race regularly to just start with 9".

I agree with J 100%. 8.8" rear ends are just as expensive as a 9" to build with similar parts. If it makes you feel any better go outside with a stack of $100 bills and start lighting them on fire one at a time until all $3500 is consumed. Then you will come to the conclusion that J and myself came to very quickly and buy a 9" and be done with it for good. Just my two cents.

Well I listened to you on the JDM build but I wish I would've listened on the 9".
I will say this double braced 8.8 has done well, but 9" will eventually happen.
If any drag action will regularly happen on sticky tires, as Dale said, you'll be even money on a 9", probability of money ahead for selling a quiet '13-14 8.8

If you do the install yourself, you want the bearing preload on the tighter side of spec. Also, make sure you use the green loktite retaining compound on the ring gear to differential, helps keep the ring gear from wiggling around under load.

Ford Racing gears should go right in with the factory shims in place. All FRPP gears and factory gear sets are machined on the same equipment at Ford's Sterling axle and gear plant. I elected to use the Moser (read ARP) 8.8 diff cap stud kit and the Ford G2 girdle style diff cover. Those with the diff cooler might not be able to use the G2 cover, but it sure does beef the pumpkin up.

What makes whine so prevalent on the S197 8.8 is the 3 link design. The upper arm and mount bolt right to the middle of the car under the rear seat. Gear whine from racing and burnouts is normal, but is amplified by the suspension design. My 4.10s were silent before heading to the track. After 3 passes, it is a little whiny, but nothing like the FRPP 3.73s were. Swarr or CHE brace is good insurance for your housing.

As has already been mentioned: If drag racing is life, head straight to a Strange or Currie or Moser S197 9".

Good post. I've done 2 gear swaps in my garage on 2 different s197 cars (see sig) with FRPP gears both times.

Both sets fell right in with the factory shims and no adjustments needed (now I know why, Thank you!).

The 3.31's in my 2014 car were silent as the 2am sky.
The 3.73s I put in my current GT500 have the ever so slightest "whir" as im driving but not even near enough of a noise to bother me whatsoever.

Seems something inherent in the ratio itself (3.73) that is noisier than the others.

I also welded my axle tubes on both cars with hopes I don't munch the 8.8 prematurely (fingers crossed!).

All that said.. LOVE my 3.73s!!

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I have 2 places that I'm going to visit and discuss this install in the new year, out of the 2 I will decide who I'll go with.

I'll post up once this gets underway.
