If you got a gear install done on your Shelby what did you pay for the job? A general price that you paid will suffice.

I know most of you are in a different country than me and pricing will be different compared to what I might pay when I get my install done in my town. I'm asking so I have an idea what general costs will be when I start talking to shops that I will be considering for this install.

Paid about $700 in labor at a ford dealer in nj for labor only. New Jersey is expensive though. Be prepared for the whine.

I paid $800 to the mod shop connected to the dealership where I bought my car. Money well spent, installer took his time and made sure he got it right. Been running the Ford racing 3.73's for about 2 years on my DD 14 with no whine, proper install is key to it being quiet.

Also just a note the 13/14's have a different pinion bearing than the 07-12's. Most install kits include the bearing for the 07-12's, Lethal sells an install kit minus the bearing for a reduced cost then you just purchase the proper 13/14 bearing separate

I've seen $600-900 around here, the last from the most expensive local dealer. I'd put something in about whine if you pay higher end at the dealer. My gears have all been quiet before launching at the strip, so if doing drag work, remember a diff brace and preferably bias ply over DRs

CHE diff axle brace also ordered...............got my 13 Shelby specific brg sitting with my gear set.

Gotta still get front pinion brg and race, pinion seal, nut and 2 axle seals. I'm not sure about new carrier brgs or axle brgs do they need to be changed also? I have just over 13,000 miles on the car and the rear axle fluid has been changed once already couple years ago.

Damn, I'd be pissed if I paid $700 in labor and it WHINED.

OP, I've had this done on a few different cars and the key IMHO is to find someone who knows how to do it so it DOESN'T WHINE.

Good luck

It was dead quiet at first but a few hard launches at the track made it whine enough to drive me nuts. Something changes the setup after launching it.

I'm getting ready to have 3.73 gears installed on my '09. All Ford OEM parts being used. I've been quoted from $400 to $1000 from various local shops.

Yes that makes sense if they provide the gears and install kit. I know OP already has a special gear set and the required install kit. Just labor on gear install is less obviously

I paid...A LOT. At first the car was super quiet, I was in awe. After 5 passes at the track... the whining made its return.

My guess on these whines would be: improper shimming of the pumpkin allowed ring gear to move away from the pinion, thus increasing the backlash.

If you guys ever diagnose the issue, please post. Thanks, and good luck.

kwarnerjr - did you take it back to installer? Are they going to fix it?

Wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others so you don't make the same mistakes.
Point is that others and I have all had the same experience---perfection and whine free driving after install, developement of whine after drag launches.
Pretty simple--barely strong enough axle flexes on a track launch and whine starts. MANY threads on this.

Why not do it yourself? Ive done two now.... installed 3.27's on my '14 Coyote car (super quiet) and i also installed 3.73s in my GT500.

I also welded my axle tubes on each during the install so hopefully a few drag launches dont trash my install job.

So, are you saying a bent axle causes whine? Not trying to bust your chops... just curious... as you say "Wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others...."

I've seen bent (and broken) axles, and they will usually announce their presence with a vibration of some sort.

Anyway, I've been a GM guy for most of my life, so maybe Fords are different..............

Learning from others meant I've had 3 gears changed on this car and if someone searches this forum on gear whine you'll see it's fromdrag use meaning the entire axle assembly flexes and then you'll have gear whine. Several threads have detailed ways to minimize it--basics are rear 8.8" brace and bias ply tires are both your friends.
For regular drag use, just swap a 9" and you'll be money ahead.
It's a 4000+# manual trans car with 700+ torque

I've had tons of GM cars, never had a diff whine, always beat the snot out of them, no issues.

Then this year, I decide to check off a 'bucket list' item and buy a Mustang. Interestingly, I test drove 3 (all supercharged) and they all had noticeable diff whine, some worse than others. The car I ended up buying does indeed have a whine. I checked my ring/pinion backlash and it's 0.018", which is about double factory spec, so I plan on shimming the pumpkin back to factory spec this Winter to see if that eliminates the whine.

Thanks

Early on, I'd thought of doing a gear swap. Then after all the whine complaints, decided to leave it alone. It's just a street car & I've gotten accustomed to the tall 1st gear.
With added power you can cover a lot of ground in 1st & 2nd gear.
