Pure gas

Anyone run pure gas in their car? Mustang or DD? There are a couple of stations around me that sell 100% gasoline, and I'm wondering what, if any advantages there are to running it. Unfortunately, they only sell it in 87 octane. I'm thinking of trying it in my daily driver to see if there are any efficacy advantage, problem is, it's the same price as 93 octane. Is pure 87 better than e10 93? The car doesn't need the higher octane. Just looking for someone with experience with "pure gas" as they call it.

We have several stations here that sell it , same as you it's only 87 . I mostly see the lawn services using it .

87 is shit gas, even if it's "ethanol free". 93 will always be better. Even with 10% E.
If a car runs on it without ping, it is the right gas. Running 93 on any car that is not tuned for higher octane is a waste of money.

Octane is rating is just a number to indicate resistance to knock.

I store 89 octane ethanol free gas for the zombie apocalypse because it lasts longer, especially when treated with Stabl or PRI-G. Around here it is considered Marine gas.

I run 93 in my Cobra.

You only need pure gas in engines that are not run very often. It is also good for boats as ethanol absorbs water. I get a gallon in the fall and run it in the yard equipment before I put them away, and in the snowblower in the spring.

It's only sold in low octane form because it's meant for engines that are not run often, i.e. lawn equipment that is stored all winter. You might see a slight increase in mpg if you can run 87 octane in your daily driver, but otherwise there are no benefits.

It’s not only sold in low octane form, that’s just what that specific gas station decided to sell. I use ethanol free 92 octane all the time.

It called “ethanol free gas.” Not “pure gas”

As others have said, it’s not better than 93. It’s just regular 87 octane with no ethanol and most commonly used for boats or other items that don’t get used often. Ethanol free fuel is more stable and less damaging to fuel systems (carb, fuel lines, etc).

Ask anyone who’s run E85 (which is gas with an 85% ethanol content) what happens when it sits for a period of time.

Its not worth using in your DD, but wouldn’t be a bad choice for a weekend car that only needs 87 octane.

We have a bunch here that sell because of the boating. It's like 91 octane and they charge a damn fortune for it.

Hear about this all the time from people from Wisconsin. “Where can I find ethonal free gas in Illinois” “my car runs horrible if the gas has ethonal”
I shake my head. Ethonal is an ingredient used to raise octane. Non-ethonal fuels are blended with methonal instead.

We have it here and i dont use it in the cars. Do the math, you'll maybe see 4% improvement in MPG on ethanol free vs E10, but the price is typically 20-30% more? Explain how that makes sense... Not to mention i'll take the extra knock suppression as others have mentioned as well.

I can see the point for small engines, boats, etc... but in a car i'll take my ethanol.

I'm in Wisconsin and the gas types vary around here. Most stations (BP, PDQ's, Mobils, Citgo's, etc) have 87 and 89 with ethanol in it. Some stations have 93 with ethanol and some have 91 with no ethanol. All Kwik Trips that I know of (Wisconsin based business) have 91 with no ethanol, they call it "premium recreational gasoline".

Not a ton of E85 stations around and there are some stations near oval short tracks that will carry 105-108 octane fuel.

My Cobra is tuned for 93 so I run 93 with 10% ethanol. I used to experiment a bit and run non-ethanol fuel in previous cars and I would notice a slight bump in mileage. I run 87 in my 4Runner but if I am towing the boat I will put in 89 as that is recommended for the 10:1 C/R 2UZ V8.

There are also some independent stations around that carry 87, 89, and 91 without ethanol. The gas costs a bit more but I generally try to put that fuel in the lawnmower and snowblower and always put it in the boat. 87 non-ethanol from the small station is a lot cheaper than 91 non-ethanol from a big station.

Oh and for the record, other than a very slight bit more power with higher octane fuel in the 4Runner and a bit better mileage with non-ethanol fuel, I never noticed that any of my cars "ran better" with non-ethanol fuel.

A station near me sells 93 EtOH free gas. I used to run it quite a bit. I get a very small mileage boost when running it. It can be hard to get to that pump at times though. Every landscape company in the area is always there filling up cans.
