If I’m not staying in the City, I always stay somewhere that has a metro stop either outside or under the hotel. I think there are a couple over in Alexandria. So wife has never been to DC and wants to go this spring. Will not go during the cherry blossom thing as do not like crowds. Anyway where would be the best areas to stay? Plan on using the metro going to and from as have heard traffic is terrible. Was not bad when I went but that was back in the 80's. Need somewhere that is accessible to the hotel. Do not know if hotels provide shuttle to and from the station. Thanks for any hints.
Two pieces of advice. Wear your most comfortable shoes and visit the holocaust museum.
I went during spring break last year and it was miserable. The museums were packed! Something to think about. Also short 2-3 hour drive north will land you in Gettysburg, that was really cool and you can easily burn a day there including the travel time.

What time of year were you there? We have been to Gettysburg. Spent three days there a few years back and it is awesome. Also did Sharpsburg when we were touring the battlefields on that trip.
That sounds like a great tour!I recommend the night time monument tour. We did it with kids when they were under 10 and was a lot of fun. The tour guide tells u alot of stuff the history book dont.
I was assigned to FT Belvoir and lived in Woodbridge VA...you can fins some affordable hotels there or if military retired Ft Belvoir VA lodging...about 25 miles to DC area...I would rent a car if you can and find a 10-20 dollar a day parking area in DC...National Archives house 5he Declaration of Independence, go to the National museum of natural history to see that TITanic based HOPE blue diamond ...huge blue diamond...for lunch I recommend District Tacos...yum yum yum...
