Cam Timing?

I just had a machine shop replace some valves and block had to be bored.020 new pistons etc. when I go back together with this thing what all do I have to do with the timing. Do I get #1 at TDC and line up everything on the dots and chains etc, or do I have to go more in depth? Thanks in advance.

It's been a while since I've done that. But it's basically setting the dots to a certain spot and matching up the dots and links on the chains. There's a PDF copy of the manual somewhere around here that will show it in more detail.

But if you have the means and access to the tools it's probably worth degreeing them since you're there.

Yeah I really don’t have the tools. If it’s necessary it is what it is I’ll have to buy the tools. Chances I’ll ever use them again is slim to none.

The manual does call for a couple tools to set the crank and cams, but I assembled a couple 4V's without them with no issues. You just have to be more careful things don't move while putting the chains on.

Guess I could use some big vice grips lol, or just not be a cheapo. I wonder if AutoZone has a loaner for that. I wouldn’t use much else from there but.

Set the dots on gears with the dark links on the chains and it’s good to go.

It’s very easy with the followers not installed. With them installed, might be harder to get the cams to line up and not jump with the cam lobes. That’s the point of the cam holding tools.

You can remove and install the followers with a large flat head screw driver. Pry against the cam lobe and they will pop in and out pretty easy. Will need to turn the motor over by hand to release pressure on each follower before prying them in or out.

So you just roll it over till you pop all the followers out, get it Back to TDC and put all the gears and chains on, then go back through and install the followers. Or does #1TDC not matter?

Get the proper tools. A mistake will cost you more that the tools or have a well known 4v shop complete the long block build.

Please don't use vice grips. As mentioned pull the followers and it'll be a lot easier. The screwdriver isn't too hard to learn. My wife helped me with installing the followers in my engine.
