Has anyone had any trouble out of the rear-end of their 2002 explorer? I have what sounds like a worn ring and pinion or a worn pinion bearing. Just curious is this is normal after 77,000 miles.

That doesn't sound normal. The IRS on the Explorer should last a lot longer. It's going to be expensive to fix, so get prepared for that. Have you been doing a lot of towing?

I have a 98 & a 03 and I have not experienced any issue or heard any noise from the rear on either. There are a few message board I belong to that you could post on to see if anyone else has had this issue.
