Gonna change out the stock 3.55 gears with 4.10's. Looks like 125 mph will be top end with 4.10's. Can anyone tell me if 5th gear will provide more top end speed?

Dont know why youd want to go faster than 125 but you should have no problem pegging out the speedo with 4.10s.

Mach1 4R70W ratios as follows
2.84
1.55
1.00
0.70 (OD)

Manual
.62 ratio, 80mph, at X.XX:1 rear gear ratio

3.55 = 2304 rpm
3.73 = 2421 rpm
4.10 = 2661 rpm
4.30 = 2791 rpm
4.56 = 2960 rpm

top speed w/ 3.55s, 5th gear @ 6798 rpm = 236 mph
top speed w/ 3.73s, 5th gear @ 6780 rpm = 224 mph
top speed w/ 4.10s, 5th gear @ 6787 rpm = 204 mph
top speed w/ 4.30s, 5th gear @ 6769 rpm = 194 mph
top speed w/ 4.56s, 5th gear @ 6771 rpm = 183 mph

Auto
.70 ratio, 80mph, at X.XX:1 rear gear ratio

3.55 = 2602 rpm
3.73 = 2733 rpm
4.10 = 3005 rpm
4.30 = 3151 rpm
4.56 = 3342 rpm

top speed w/ 3.55, @ 5789 rpm = 178 mph
top speed w/ 3.73, @ 5775 rpm = 169 mph
top speed w/ 4.10, @ 5784 rpm = 154 mph
top speed w/ 4.30, @ 5791 rpm = 147 mph
top speed w/ 4.56, @ 5765 rpm = 138 mph

You can go 125 with 4.30's. 4.10's should get you in the 130's. I'm doing 4.56's and can get to 120 if I wind it out to 7k with custom cams.

Guess I should have been more specific. Looks like 4th gear is good to 120 or so. I'm just wondering if 5th (which basically an overdrive gear now) will actually provide more speed with the 4.10 gears?

For drag racing no, 5th will net you nothing. With 4.30's it makes it nice to not have to down shift for passing.

First off, 5th is a overdrive no matter what rear gear you have. So yea 5th will give you more top speed then 4th but you don't what to do WOT pulls in 5th. Plus there is no need for it. Why do you think people set there cars up to top there 1:1 gear(4th) out in the 1/4 or 1/8 if its a track car. Plus a cars performance is junk in OD in most cars.

5th is a waste of time from my experience... plus i wouldnt want to be on the floor that long without the head cooling mod

Thank you sir! That's exactly correct.

Any thoughts as to what gear is preferred for a mostly stock Mach 1? I wanna make a change soon, but I'm somewhat undecided yet. Some people say replacing the stock 3.55's with 3.73's isn't much of a change. At least not one that you'll feel in the driver seat. Other say 4.10's with a stock suspenstion setup will create a problem with traction getting off the line. The car is only driven street & highway. I just want to make the car a bit quicker overall. I've changed my mind about 4 times in a short period of time. I'm leaning to 4.10's though. One other thing, I would like to add a ProCharger sometime in the future.

I have 4.10's with LT's and CAI; and the car is real strong and quick. I am also toying with the idea of a procharger but can't make up my mid for now.

I was in the same boat you were, trying to decide between 3.73s and 4.10s. I finally decided 4.10s and couldnt be happier. It's perfect for DD and the performance is spot on.
Myself, I wouldnt do 4.30s, unless you are going to the track every weekend.

4.10's Installed

4.10's were installed yesterday. Very happy with my decision. It' s the perfect gear for the Mach (in my opinion). I would have been very disappointed with 3.73's. Definitely brought the car to life.:rockon:

236 mph stock? I think your numbers might be a little off...
