My buddy recently bought a mystic 96 cobra with around 120,000 on it, we went playing around in it and the thing misses terrible in the 5 grand rpm range, I mean conciderable drop off, could this possibly be from the plugs or wires? not burning the fuel properly at high rpms? or something worse?

I would change the fuel filter, check the condition of the plugs, and if the wires have never been changed then thats a good place that could bring the problem as well

I would do all of the above. Who knows the last time it was done?

I'd be willing to bet that the wires are the problem, especially if they are stock.

Check the plugs, wires, and coil packs. If it's got aftermarket coil packs there's a large chance they are the culpret. I had a similar issue and after changing back to stock coil packs it was fine.
