Looking at doing a t56 swap, I have mostly stock 4.6 and a 01 IRS w/ 3.55. My question is, will my car drive like poo with the gear ratio of the t56 with my setup?
You might have to go to a 4.10 rear gear to be back to where you are with the 5 speed and the 3.55. However, it Depends on the gear ratios of the T56 in question.
Depends on how much HP/TQ you're going to make. 4.10's on a car making 500-600ftlbs to the tires isn't much fun on the street IMO. I run 3.55's currently making 641/588 and will probably go down to a 3.27 once the power starts to go up again.
You will definitely want more gear if you stay naturally aspirated. I would probably put in a 4.30.
If your plan is to go forced induction and it is your average centri car with mid-400's horsepower and torque, a 4.10 would be great in my opinion. Anything higher than that and I would think about 3.73's or 3.55's.
For years I've run a 3.55 with a T56 making 810rwhp the last time it was tuned (I need to have it retuned). I've been very happy with that setup. It has a great power band, it loads the turbo well and it cruises awesome.
I had the factory 3.27s in my solid axle rear end with my stock 4.6 when I swapped my T-56 in. The car was a dog, I couldn't even spin the tires. I eventually had the entire rear end rebuilt with 31 spline axles and swapped to 3.73's in case I ever go forced induction. I barely make it through a stop light before I'm shifting into second now, but I'm happy with it.
