Cobra's have Struts (front), Shocks (rear)..

A Strut or Shock with a coil spring around it is a Coil-Over. I can only wish ford would have gave us that from the factory.

In fact, all Mustangs that I know of (87on up) have Struts in the Front and Shocks in the rear. Most if not all of the Solid Axle rear end Mustangs have quad shocks in the rear!

:)

Hope that clears things up!

It's considered a hybrid McPherson strut since the coil springs are moved off the strut assembly to a remote location on the suspension next to the strut. I kinda like the set up since you can work with the springs and struts a whole lot easier seperately than you can when they are together.
I'm not sure that I would compare it to a coil over or want it that way from the factory. This way gives you more room for suspension mods, including going to coil-over struts.
The second set of horizontal shocks on the rear of live axle Mustangs are on the lighter duty side of control. They are there more for axle positioning and horizontal axle control than anything else. Better than with just 2 though :)

Vinnie,

Good post!

LOL :) Yah, they are pretty much the same. I had an 86 T-Bird Turbo Coupe and 86 Mustang GT once upon a time. Those two had suspensions that were identical (same platform), and just like you see on an '03 GT today. Out side of the tweaking Ford has done over the years, this suspension still traces it's roots back to the Fairmont where the hybrid strut design started. Ain't to bad for a 25 year old design with humble beginnings
