I bought the boot from Latemodel Resto. No instructions, but 95% of install was self explanatory.. Until I realized the retainer wouldn't work.

It looks like I'll have to cut up this new boot and make it wide at the top to glue in the factory ring.. Please tell me there is some super easy fix that I'm just too dumb to realize???

Using an aftermarket knob obviously, not the stock shifter knob. Anyone done this?

Ya I went hardcore.. Made it fit exactly as stock. It was a massive bitch, HUGE margin for error.. So I do not recommend. But mine looks great. I was too impatient to wait for other options once the site went down and my console was apart lol

Just get an aftermarket knob, don't try to butcher it to fit.
Aftermarket knob is better anyhow! IMHO
