Hey everyone. Took my alternator off today as my cobra wouldn’t start. Couldn’t get it to jump either. Was hoping to see if the community could offer some guidance. The wire attached was completely burnt. Is there another issue that is contributing to this or is this what these cars do to these? Before I purchase another alternator, want to make sure I’m not missing anything. Thank you for looking.

Damn. Def had some heat there.

Isn’t that line fused!?!

Typically you’re gonna see that when there is too much current. First guess would be a poor connection/resistance. Possibly inside the Alt or right there at the lug.

What’s the end of the cable look like? Was the lug still connected to the cable?

and no, this isn’t the typical Terminator charging problem.

You had some sort of resistance right there. Car is demanding a certain amount of amperage and either the lug came loose inside the Alt or the cable wasn’t tight to the lug.

You only had a small contact patch that couldn’t carry the load and poof.

Ive seen this once to many times unfortunately @TERMINATORSAINT This is due to a possible .....

1.) Loose or corroded connections at the alternator or battery.
2.) Bad alternator grounding
3.) Bad cable between the alternator and battery. (Do a voltage Drop test on cable to identify high resistance)
4.) Defective or damaged alternator/regulator (Likely failed diodes)
5.) Defective battery
6.) Yes.....there could be another electrical issue but more than likely was caused by one of the above mentioned.

When I was a tech. I saw that many times, in all likelyhood the nut that secures the B+ cable was loose and the connector started to arc, which caused it to further loosen and the rest is history. Word to all, check that nut on the B+ terminal from time to time and make sure it's tight. Vinnie B,s advice is also sound.
