Anyone running 255's on the stock rims?

I am looking to get new tires this winter and I would like to go bigger than the stock 245/45/17. I am a little concerned that 275/40/17 would stick out too much past the rim, so I was wondering if the 255/45/17 or the 255/40/17 would be a good fit. Any suggestions???? Thanks

The 255 are odd sizes and don't look right. The 275/40 is the correct profile but doesn't fully contact the ground. Honestly, the 245s in whatever tire suits your needs work the best on the stock rims.

Yep.

A bunch of us have run the 275 tire, but you lose some of that extra width because the rim pulls some of the contact patch up off the ground. The OEM rim is 1.5" narrower then what the tire manufactuers recommend.

If this is the case, do you gain anything by going with the 275/40/17? It seems like a lot of pepole on this forum are running the 275's.

More than likely. You may gain a bit in straight line traction, however with the distorted side wall, it would be less than ideal for corner carving IMO. Tire manufactuers make tires for specific wheel sizes for a reason.

I ran 255/40's for awhile on my street car, they looked fine. Look at the actual tire dimensions on the manufactures website, some don't match 255mm=10.04".

I run 255 Falken Azenus on my 93R, the are ~10.5" wide on all four corners. Tight fit.

that is because it is the most popular drag radial size made for a 17" wheel..

I run 275/40-17 Nitto drags and have run Mickeys as well. I do this simply for traction but the car handles much better with a 245 which I use when doing road course events.
