Avid golfers, how often do you fall into a slump?

This has been getting very frustrating for me. I usually fall into a slump a few times a year where nothing goes right.

Recently, I couldn't chip for the life of me (which is usually decent) and I was striking my driver better than I ever have.

Now the roles are reversed, and I'm struggling big time with my driver. Sometimes I barely get off the tee box. Or it's a hard hook.

I play my best when I'm not thinking about any mechanics, just grip it and rip it. But now since the struggle, I'm overthinking everything. And obviously it's making it worse.

I've seriously thought about taking a week or two break from it, but the wife already made a tee time for Friday.

I'm sure I'm not the only one! Who else deals with this? The mind can be the worst thing for a golfer.....

Usually my short game is not bad and my driver is erratic.

Last three outings my driver has been great for me. More fairways off the tee box in three rounds than probably ever round of my life combined.

My short game has been inconsistent though. Two things I learned is that I got too accustomed to ball flight in cooler weather so I need to recalibrate myself and I have never hit out of true rough until Saturday.

Last two rounds were a 106 where the rough killed me around the green and a 94 where I was 6 over after the 1rst two holes. However, these were legit scores no mulligans, take penalties.

I know they may not be perfect but, a personal launch monitor, I believe, is really helping. I am getting a better understanding of swing speeds and working that into memory. I have also worked a pre shot routine in and been sticking with it. Last thing is a new mental approach. I try to take about 5-10 mph off my driver swing the first two holes and just hit the fairway. Build confidence, then start bringing in the speed.

My last three outings I have averaged a solid 285 off the tee with hero drives of 309 and 324.

When I can't hit my driver, I slow my back swing down to focus on keeping my left heel down and swinging smoothly.

Geez I wish I could hit my driver that far. I'm lucky if I hit 240-250....

My short game is decent, especially my putting. My best round this year is a 95. I'd like to be consistently in the 90's. But I always have a bad hole or two....

Lately I've stopped keeping score and just tried concentrating on playing better. Otherwise I'm just focused on the score.

Same with my sex life

They must of closed some Applebee’s? No hog hunting?

OP maybe just try and relax when golfing? Try not to over think it? I’ve never golfed besides the driving range. I’d like to learn someday.

Driver: imagine there's two vertical sticks in the ground about 7 yards in front of the tee box that you're trying to hit the ball through. It'll square your club head up longer and mitigate you rolling over and hooking.

Irons: focus on keeping your head down/over the ball and hit it a little fat.

Learned both those from a lesson and they helped immensely.

I have increased my swing speed by 6mph since August which I was shocked by. I didn’t think I really would at my age.

The big changes for me has been the mental approach, the grip, stance, and then a minor adjustment of a little more shallower backswing and downswing.

My hurdle right now is distance control. I always swing hard and used what club was appropriate for 100% shots with said club. I’ve been working on control and my yardages I learned were over the winter so I am readjusting. That said, the biggest issue is the control on my chip shots. I never did that type of shot until a few months ago.

I am having a lot more fun know that I can mentally relax more on the tee box.

Both solid pieces of advice.

For me, my swing needs to feel like im on top of the ball powering through it. -- More vertical than horizontal if that makes sense.

When my swing has a horizontal feel, im all over the damn place and can't put a 100 game together to save my life.

Sorry, that's all I got.

The next big question is, where and when is the SVTP golf outing?”

I remain undefeated in putput....

I also always keep score.

The two are unrelated.

While hanging out with my golf friend and his wife who play 2 to 3 times weekly in Ponte Vedra beach down in Florida last week we decide to play Top Golf in Jacksonville. What a mistake that was. Took me an hour just to get something that resembles a golf swing from 30 years ago the last time I swung a club. Mini golf is my only golf game sadly.....

Just got back from the range. I hit about 50 golf balls with my driver. I feel like I may have ironed out a few things.

My biggest problem on the course I guess was not keeping my head down and still. I concentrated on that today at the range and it went much better.

I need to remind myself to hit the range once in awhile when things aren't going well.

I have a pxg 0811+ driver that I really like..... just not lately. Overall it's been my best driver so far.

Went today and fought a bad knot in my upper left back by my shoulder blade. And my right hand pinky that interlocks with my left hand is very sore. Might be a sprain.....

The land of commies and socialists!
I've been playing different sports all my life and I've had slumps with all of them, golf included.

What I've found is I slack off or get lazy 1 or 2 seemingly minor aspects of my mechanics.

The trick for me is to find it. With golf it's usually my alignment to my target. Most don't understand how critical it is because it will change how you route the club on the down swing.

My advice is to go to the range. Warm up and then hit 5 balls. Step back and think about it. Think about each shot and how it felt. Make 1 change and 1 change only, hit 5-10 more shots and re-examine everything.

Make sure your grip hasn't gotten to strong and you don't have to much tilt in your shoulders trying to lift the ball.

Without a good look at your swing that's about all I have. Good luck.

I love golf, but I will admit I’m still a newb at it. However I’ve found taking a break is good. I went and played at the Admirals Bakers course here in San Diego recently and I had one of my best games since last summer and oddly enough I was just using my irons….. because I may or may have not broken the head off my driver lol
