Broken speedo

For a few years now, my speedometer on the '91 has been broken. (It's an acquired skill, estimating your speed by the tachometer). It bounces around the dial rather randomly, usually in the upper range. Does this sound more like a broken cable, or gear? I would certainly like to avoid taking my dash apart to fix this someday.

The easiest thing to do is jack the car up .Pull the speedo gear out and look at it and the gear inside the tranny.If its ok then its the cable.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone could tell me whether the wild bouncing is more customary with either type of breakage. It would seem to me that the dial would not bounce if the cable were broken, but I really have no idea having never examined the setup personally...
