So he hears a noise n some vibrations coming from the rear n suspects a wheel bearing is going. On the way to the dealer it's gets worse so he slows because he's only a block away. Suddenly the left rear locks up n shears all the wheel studs! Any ideas? I figured a hub would just grenade but seize to the extent it shears 5 studs?

Can't vouch for his actions I was just surprised a hub could seize n shear off studs instead of exploding into pieces.

I've had a wheel bearing seize up before. It sheered the spindle off on my '69 Firebird. When the bearing fails it will lock. The weakest component will fail first. IN the case of your brother in law, it was the studs that failed before the spindle itself.

Oops sorry about the grammar. Yesterday was my birthday and I was many beers in when I wrote that post. As far as the car is concerned its a 2006 M5. Lug bolts or studs couldn't say, not my car and it's 3000 miles away. I will try not to " drinkded" before I post anymore. Lol
