I have a 66 mustang in California and obviously they come with black license plates. Mine has blue ones on it though, so it was re-registered somewhere along the road. I have a set of mint black license plates that I picked up from a car show, and they are in the correct sequence for my cars era. I went to the DMV to get them switched but they would not let me. Someone told me I can order a custom vanity plate with the same lettering as my black plates (which is available) and just throw them on my car. My question is will a cop be able to tell in the computer that I should have white plates versus the black ones?

As long as the plates are registered through DMV and they have the correct registration sticker, it will not matter. But, they must be plates issued by the California DMV. If they are vanity plates, they will show as such when run through the data base.
