i may look at some Gen 2 SHO' spretty soon. i have a question though. are there alot of aftermarket parts for them? ive seen a couple of them witha vortech or a powerdyne.

are there any probs with the Yamaha engine?

ive been a big fan of taurus's for a while ( my first car was a 94 3.8 GL was totalled by construction workers :mj: )

Major Problems with the Yamaha. NO not really. Just needs its 60k Maintenance (valves shims is the biggest concern). The typical things are the water pumps starting leaking from the wheep hole and killing the crank position sensor. Thats typically included in the 60k.

Aftermarket. yes there is a decent aftermarket but it is $$$$$$. For example if you want to s/c the SHO, your looking at around 5k for the kit. Then tuning. and on top of that the stock Yamaha doesn't last a long time. I think about 30k under boost. Lower the c/r a little bit and in your in there.

i agree with rtstabler51 just as long as you give it its 60k and fix small problems before you have more you should be fine
good luck on getting a sho man

The Yamaha engine is a great engine. The only problems are from the acual Ford parts in the car. Drop by the SHOFourm.com and ask around there. It's full of tons of great guys that can answer any question you have about them. Just stay away from the automatic SHO's.... There nothin' but trouble as I know very well. Even with my custom tranny it's still goin. Oh well... :-D

Ben,

I disagree.

My 93 ATX had 118k hard miles on it. I'm sure I helped 90% of my problems come to light. And original tranny.

Moms 94 ATX 90k and still going strong :)

I'll probably get flamed for this, but... I'd get a MTX over an ATX. It is "fun" to row through the gears on a MTX. I wouldn't spend alot of money on mods either. Modding the SHO is expensive and doesn't do much for the dollars spent. I would replace the Y-pipe and suspension tweaks. That's about it...

There are guys that spend big bucks to get a ~15 second car to run mid 14s. Whoopie!!! The SHO has horrible traction issues: either you bog or spin. From a roll, it barks and can threaten bigger dogs. The SHO is most threatening on the highway and will never be a good quarter miler.

Now the 2003 Cobra I test drove last weekend would slap my SHO silly shifting at less than 3K RPMs on the Cobra tach. A real bad BIG DOG that Cobra...

BigSHO, I agree. I'd still love to have my 93 ATX back, but if I could do it all over again, I get the MTX first. But the ATX is alot better than people give it credit

Agreed... The ATX's are not as bad as people say they are. I would take a low mileage 94/95 ATX no problem. Once you start getting in to the ATX world, however, tons more possibilities exist. That being the case and changing subjects, I'd probably get a GTP. I'm sure I'll get flamed now:)

The 155MPH 2004 GTP G Force with 280HP/280TQ, racing automatic, and .85G skidpad should be a HELL of a car. I test drove a 2000 GTP awhile back. They BARK off the line. It would beat my SHO and SVT off the line. My son's modified 2000 CSVT would beat it off the line. All of our cars would beat this stock GTP in high end. The GTP got easily winded at highway speeds even shifting the auto manually. The GTP was stock. Mash the gas in drive and the tranny gives up too easily and shifts lazily at ~4K. Nothing a shift kit in the auto wouldn't fix. The handling is subpar compared to a 26mm rear sway SHO or definitely a CSVT. Pontiac calls it wide track - more like wallow track:uh oh:

It sure looks like Pontiac fixes all the GTP problems in 2004.

I agree. I wish I would have gone with a MTX SHO. The only reason I got one was I'm put on about 1000 miles on it a week and at the time an automatic sounded a bit more appealing. The custom tranny makes it faster then the typical ATX but I wouldn't have these tranny issues with the MTX (other then blowin' holes through the tranny as 3 of my friends recently did in their's). I just wanted a fast 4-door and something that wasn't too common. I'll still line up with any other 4-door automatic 6 banger any day.
