i beleive all 1996-2004 4.6L blocks are roughly the same. with the exception of the casting numbers.

the casting numbers on my 2004 cobra black claims it came from a 1997 crown victoria... ..

If it's a cobra shortblock your fine. A 4v shortblock...you should be fine. I'm pretty sure any 2v short block won't have the piston you need.

You can also use newer Mach, and aviator and be fine.

I think just knock sensors are a different thread.. the 96-98 have big thread and the 99-05 have smaller thread.....You can get an adapter to fit the 99 style...

You already have the short block or still pricing things out...???

96-98 engines seem to be much cheaper and easier to find. If it will work, it makes my life a lot easier.

I appreciate the responses, but has anyone got personal experience with this?
