SLIDELL, La. -- A man was killed in an apparent drag race over the weekend when he swerved to avoid an oncoming pickup truck, authorities said.
Donald Barrett, 28, of Slidell was racing his 1998 Chevrolet Camaro west, against traffic, on the two-lane U.S. Highway 90 against another car when he swerved to avoid the pickup truck, officials said.
Barrett's car spun clockwise and off the westbound shoulder of the road into a pine tree at about 7 p.m. on Saturday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was hurt.
The other driver in the drag race, who was in a Ford Mustang, could face charges, state police spokesman Sgt. John Hartzog said.
