Took the differential out of my 03 to do some upgrades and discovered it has an Eaton. Anyone know about the spacer that goes on between the axles? How is it held in place? I'm thinking about putting one axle in and then installing the spacer from the other side and then install the other axle. That sound about right?

The spacer just sits in there. It prevents the axles from moving inward and rubbing on the axle seal. I have heard it is not needed on IRS cars. However, when I first built my IRS I left it out and my driver side axle was rubbing very slightly on the seal. I disassembled everything after 500 miles to check backlash and gear pattern and I put it in when I reassembled. No more rubbing.

I did the same thing. Put one axle in. Slide the spacer in from the other side then the other axle. No problems.

That’s what I thought. I really couldn’t find any info about where it goes so I was a little hesitant about just setting it in there. Thanks for the info.
