Engine mounts

Hi guys, I had a vibration at around 2200RPM on my 2003 Cobra Coupe and I noticed that the previous owner had change the mounts for some Poly ones and that the two metal parts of the mounts were bolted together. Should they be a gab between the two metal part?

I had a pair of pretty much the same mounts (From AM) and brand new they were not touching. so I installed them with about 1/8" of gap and there alot less vibration in the car now.

So what is the correct way to installed them? It appears to me that bolting the two parts of the mounts tight render the soft part useless.

Steet to steel is going to transfer more vibration but isolated to a specific rpm doesn't sound right.
