Gear shop is getting ready to rebuild and set up my diff. He said the Ford performance gear specs calls for .011 to .016 and he would feel comfortable setting it at .011 but would set it lower if I wanted. I have always felt there is too much back lash and can hear the clunk sometimes when taking off. Need some opinions from those who have set their own back lash or what they had a shop set it to.----- I would really like to go lower like around .008. He also told me the stock ford gear specs where .006 to .010

When I rebuilt my rear end I followed the .011-.016 spec. It's been a minute, but I'm pretty sure it fell right in the middle. No clunks from my IRS.

I just found a ford performance racing 8.8 instruction sheet and list specs .008 to .012 but maybe the irs diff requires more back lash???

The aluminum housing requires different specs. It expands more as it heats up. IIRC after setting backlash you're supposed to spread it and add another .015" to help account for that.
