I have a family member who recently died. During his wake, the Freemasons came and gave a short service to honor my family member.

As my family member never really spoke of the Freemason fraternity, I have to ask, what are the pros and cons of joining the organization?

You should have recognized some individuals that were at the service as being respected members of the community from the which deceased resided.
