i know this a car site, but i've also noticed alot of ppl here with extensive taste and experience in various areas, so...

about a year back, i sent my book to some friends and ppl i know for a review. overall, about 20 reviews.
now, i told these ppl to overly critical and handpicked ppl that i know are readers. i told them to compare my book with other books they've read within the genre(military/sci-fi). the response has been very positive. now, thats without any editing really.
the problem is with publishers. these guys are freaking dicks to unknown authors, and for good reason i know. anyone had experience dealing with these guys? i hate to spend thousands on a great editing job when a publisher won't even look at an unknown author. i don't expected alot of authors on this site, but if one gives me good advice here, its worth the post.

I have 3 Authors in my Toastmaster Club. 1 has had 3 books published and are required reading at a multiple of Universities. When she first started she send out 50 copies to various publishers and one picked her up. After that it was easy. The other 2 are regular contributors to a number of magazines but when it comes to their books are self published. Its a lot of sending out to lots of companies and then praying hard.

Self publishing has its good points in that if you can get some press (ie write for magazines, newsletters, forums etc.) the profit per book is quite good as compared to a book deal. The drawback of course is you may sell a lot less books.

Good luck!

thanks! yeah, i've been considering that approach, sending out to everyone with credibility. I'm actually completely new to the busniness end of it though.
