Gt abs in a cobra

Will a 96 GT abs module work on a cobra? I wouldn't mind a bit of reduced braking performance as long as the unit works.

It works. Although I haven't swapped one on a 96 specifically, I have installed a 2000 gt abs/traction control module onto a 99 Cobra and it's worked just fine. So I doubt you will have any problems especially if you stick to 96/97 model year parts.
