billy, alot of people run them because they are the same width as the IRS.

yes, they're the same width as a IRS

Where did you get this information?

If we are talking axles. All 8.8 housings from 79(or whenever the 8.8 started)-98 are all the same. In 99 they changed widths of the actual housing themselves.

Make sure you get the right backspacing because its not the same.

nope, thats not correct.

79-93 uses 29 3/16" axles, therefor is approx. 1.5" narrower than the 94-98
94-98 uses 29 31/32" axles which is approx. 1.5" narrower than 99-04
99-04 uses 30 11/16" axles

and the IRS is the same width as a 94-98 axle, which is 1.5" narrower than the 99-04 solid, thats why when you put a 99-04 axle in a 99-04 IRS car is spaces each wheel out about 3/4".

You are correct in your measurements and I am sure the axle lengths are right. And feel free to scour the internet to disprove the information I provided in my post!

I am rather interested in you backing up your facts that the IRS is the same width as the 94-98 axle assembly as well!

Well im going to be putting a 94-98 rear in my 03 . The questions I have are about back spacing and the use of spacers I will most likley be running 17x10 cobra wheels when i do the swap im guessing i will need to use a spacer? any suggestions on what thickness spacer ? I will be using the 17x10 cobra wheels temporally till i get the moeny to buy new set of wheels

rims/tires that have been on my car, that is IRS have also been on bryans white 99 which is also stock IRS, aswell as his drag 99 which has a 94-98 axle, and they sit exactly the same. then we have had tires off his drag 99 and his IRS 99 on heytonyman's with a 99-04 GT axle and they sit out about 3/4" further on each side than they do on bryans.

do a search in the terminator driveline section, there is more than enough posts there to back up my IRS width claims.

you will probably need to use a 1/4' or 3/8" spacer jsut like you would on a IRS car.

yea 1/4 or 3/8 will get the tire to be enough to get the wheel to stick out where they are with the irs?

no, with a 17X10.5" 03/04 wheel with 315's, you have to use a 1/4-3/8" spacer for it to fit without hitting the inner fender. and the 94-98 axle is the same width, so you would have to use the same for the 94-98 axle.
