I guess you missed what I said, they don't close. They are open from the factory. The "flap" just blocks your view from outside of the engine bay. There's a gap betwen the vent and the flap that lets any and all water in.
There's no point in buying extras, or saving the flaps or anyhting else like that. The water WILL get in no matter what you do. That's just the way it is with a functional heat extractor hood.
The mod or taking it off keeps the water from destroying the liner.
