Hood props starting to rust

Guys, I was cleaning the winter off the engines of both my SVT and my wife's '05 ZX3. I noticed (especially on her's) that the hood strut was showing a lot of rust in the middle, looks like spray has worn off the plastic coating. Has anyone else run into this? Is this a common issue?

It looks like it should just pop out of the plastic bushing at the bottom to be replaced. Is it as easy as it looks?

I'd have to go out and look at mine, it's not anything I've heard anyone mention before though.
