In spite of a presidential term limit of 12 years, Chávez often suggests that he will remain in power for 25 years, a claim he denies as a misinterpretation of his intent. However he recently proposed a constitutionally binding referendum to allow for a third term. Chávez has said that if the opposition boycotts the 2006 Venezuelan presidential election, he might hold a referendum to abolish the presidential term limit of 12 years and allow him to run for re-election "indefinitely

Foreign Policy Magazine says that Chávez is "rewriting the manual on how to be a modern-day authoritarian" by means which include allowing the bureaucracy to decay "with one exception: the offices that count votes" where he has assigned "the best minds and the brightest técnicos

Human Rights Watch expressed concern in a personal letter to Chávez over the safety of human rights defenders in Venezuela. Human rights organization Amnesty International has catalogued a number of human rights violations under Chávez's administration. As of December 2004, Amnesty International had documented at least 14 deaths and at least 200 wounded during confrontations between anti-Chávez demonstrators and National Guard, police, and other security personnel in February and March 2004, and continuing reports of unlawful killings by the police.

The guy is just a waste of space trying to make himself cool in S. America. Though most S. American countries no better than to stop dealing with the U.S.

Good post Astrocreep.

Astro, i thought you were a flaming lib? At least thats what I see people call you here.

In this case, if you were, you'd be going along with Chavez instead of addressing his hypocrisy.

I know your not a Shrubya fan, as I am not either, BUT, you just dont go along with every accusation thrown his way. Good job!

Funny how the libs, leftists, UN Members and other moonbats will sing praises to him till kingdom come. He's anti Bush thats #1 to them.
The libs also love Fidel and Mahmoud and again they are blinded by their hate for Bush.

Anyone with a lick of common sense can see right thru this stinking steamy pile of sh!t.

Move the UN to Cuber and turn the NYC UN into condos. The UN is nothing more than a platform for a bunch of piss ant countries to bash the USA for not giving them a bunch of money which is quickly pilfered.

I think its pathetic that Bushg didn't immediately have Chavez arrested and thrown out of the country. He should have done the same with that tool from Iran. Ic ould careless if they gave a speech before the UN. The UN occupies territory in this country as guest hall. Nothing more. As a leader of a country you should never allow despicable pieces of crap like that to humiliate you with their statements. THROW THEM BOTH IN JAIL! Have some fricken pride Mr. Bush. Not even a peep from Bush himself. And I don't want to hear from you Republicans who say he took the high road on this one. No president in this country should ever let another foreign leader get away with thos despicable statements. Its weakness on every level and it should never be tolerated. HE SHOULD HAVE SENT THOSE TWO CLOWNS A MESSAGE THAT YOU DON'T SPEAK TO A SITTING PRESIDENT THAT WAY IN HIS COUNTRY!!!! Weak bastard you are Bush.

After spending time in Caracas I can tell you that Chavez is not well liked there either. The lower class cares for him thats about it. Chavez can't stay off of Castro's balls.

I know this comment is likely to invite a flame war, but read through before getting your hackles up.

I can see where Chavez is coming from. I don't agree with all of his comments, but look at things through his eyes for a moment. How would you feel if some foreign government sent agents here to assassinate our President? How would you feel if another country had veto power over every resolution your country put forward in the UN?

The nuclear genie is out of the bottle, and we in the US have trained thousands of foreign students in physics and the other sciences. So what do we do when they go back home and want to bring nuclear power to their countries?

It's great for Americans to bask in the moral superiority of our political system, but let's face it: we ARE trying to impose our views on other countries. That's the essence of Chavez' speech. Yes, he was arrogant and impolite, but look past his grandstanding and see a real public relations problem America faces in the world.

History tells us that socialism and communism, and other forms of oppressive governments, are evil. But socialism as a philosophy sprang up as a counter to the excesses of capitalism. Many peoples in developing countries still see the exploitation of the multi-national companies, and turn to socialism or a religiously-based government as an offset.

Chavez may be an idiot, but don't be complacent and miss the real warning that his message carries.

One thing that I found ironic: during the speech, Chavez made the sign of the cross and posed his hands as if in prayer. I wonder if he has considered that if his buddy Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gets his way, Chavez will be forced to convert to Islam or be beheaded.
