So I believe that I'm in the right company here as some of you seem extraordinarily smart, or perhaps I'm just extraordinarily dumb, either way here is my thoughts.

    The Basis:
A one ton 4x4 crew cab truck that is diesel electric.
For this purpose lets use a 2017 Ford F-350 with the 6.2L gas pot

    The drivetrain:
All aspects remain the exact same diffs, transfer case etc... save for the motor.

We would replace it with a two cylinder diesel motor, driving a generator.

Generator would supply power to batteries, which would then turn a 400hp electric motor bolted to factory transmission.
The diesel generator would be on a on demand system so that once batteries charged it would shut off until they reached a state of 60% charge remaining.

    The reason:
A fully capable truck that could roll down highway and get 70mpg doing so.
While not being reliant on needing to stop and re-charge, and since it is diesel would be able to work in remote sites without fear of not getting home, as most remote sites have heavy equipment in the area

My question to all of you:

    Is this even plausible?
Would the combo of diesel electric with battery storage be able to produce enough power/torque to pull/carry similar loads for the same distance?
But when bob-tailing be able to achieve unheard of fuel consumption?
    Cost to convert?

This reason for this thread is basically curiousity, as the truck in question is my current work wagon, and with 180Litre/ 48gallon tank it barely can muster 700km/ 440mi. That is not loaded up to max payload either.

    No diesel option
Also they are still using the factory motor as a source of drive power.
    They are neat though

There is a company that more or less came out with a similar idea, but for big trucks. Their plan was to use a mini turbine. They are incredibly efficient in their happy range but burn a shit ton on start up and high load situations. The idea is that it can use the battery when massive amounts of power are requested and while it's cruising down the interstate, it can run on the turbine power.

I can't remember the specifics exactly, but I want to say the trucks would get like 12 mpg. Which is significant when everything else gets 5.

It's not quite that simple, but it's in the works. We will see a diesel hybrid f150 within the next 5-7 years.

Well consider the Tesla semi is coming about, you damn well they can pack that tech into a 1 ton. And it'll be even more efficient since it won't way nearly as much

Different constraints, different price points, different markets.

Oh i know its not easy peasy but I figured with the engineers and what not running around on this site it may be a interesting topic to see what would actually be required.

That would be a significant stride forward with half ton tech

See one of the points is to not have to worry about needing a charge due to remote locations..consider some days I drive two hours into a bush...there's no plug ins out there..

You see Tesla's every now and then burn to the ground hitting a chunk of debris on the road. How durable is your truck going to be when you take it off road?

Well that is a good point. The diesel generator would be mounted in the engine bay above the Electric drive motor which would be right off the front of the trans. I think room would allow this config.

The battery would be the big part, but I suspect it could be mounted opposite side of the fuel tank, with proper skid plates as required.

Battery will be huge. Closer to 2k pounds. I believe the battery in Tesla's is 1200 pounds and runs the entire length of the car iirc

Wouldn't need a trans with this setup though, so add 2k of battery and remove probably 1000 - 1500 of engine and trans? Not saying it's all fine and dandy, just pointing that out.

So the Electric motor would be able to spin at required speed to go highway speeds.

Awesome. Remove transmission and keep transfer case. Save 500 lbs and gain more room.
