Is 100,000 miles on a truck too much to buy used?

I've seen several 100,000+ mile F-250's and Cummins diesels going for $15,000-$25,000. Is that a lot of miles for a diesel?

Hell no, specially for the Cummins. Those engines should last 300k+.

Then again, it all depends on routine maintenance.

Definitely not. Truck and engine should last well past that assuming half-way decent maintenance.

bought my 6-oh powerstroke with 117k and didnt have any problems caused by high mileage!

Wherever the gov't tells me.
To give you an idea I just bought an 03 Dodge Ram SLT Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi tonight. I got a hell of a deal, however, with 102k on it it still books at 15.4k. The prices for the trucks you posted may be about accurate. I would like to know the details on the Cummins though. Is it a 12v or a 24v?

Even on a gas motor it's not that bad anymore. The game changer is maintenance records and how it was used.

My 1500 Ram is gas [4.7 v8] and has 205k on it. Other than a water pump at 110k and another at 188k its been a good truck/motor.
Diesel will run well over 500k with the right maintainence

I wouldn't consider a 100k+ diesel truck for the reason that both dodge and ford have crappy interiors. By the time you get 100k, the seats will have tears and the steering wheel leather will be worn away. You are also paying that much money for a vehicle with no warranty and is very expensive to repair.

please remember that while diesels last longer, its still in a mechanical vehicle thats the same as the gas version. suspension, steering, other drivetrain, electronics, ect still wear out.

Not even on a gas motor. I'm looking at trucks too and I am seeing a lot of them with 160K and up.

The 01 with the goose neck will have a ton of miles. Most trucks with a gooseneck have been all over the US with a big ass heavy trailer. My guess is mid 200,000's

There was/is a very easy trick on the 98-05 or so ford trucks to keep the mileage off them. This was fixed in later years. They are great trucks and will last forever. Just look them over real good before relying on the dash to give you mileage.
