Help me build a pure gaming laptop from
www.xoticpc.com

I want something that can run COD4 & 5 AND Crysis flawlessly etc etc
I was told to stay away from Windows Vista and to get Windows XPw/SP2 or SP3.
And that with graphics cards higher doesnt always mean better.

If you want DirectX 10 capabilities then Vista is the only choice. 8 Gigs and an 9800gtx/280gtx or ati 4870 are in need if you want to run Crysis flawless the way its meant to be played, which is with DirectX 10. I honestly have not had a single issue with Vista.

you were told wrong.

Vista is designed for a next gen hardware profile, ie 4GB or more, GeForce 8 series, all Sata drives, etc. Problem is, most people that run Vista dont know this, run it on their old XP hardware profiles, which still has like 1gb ram (DDR1 at that) integrated graphics, etc, and go around spouting garbage about Vista and its being a resource hog, etc.

Its only a resource hog when you dont have the resources available for it to work. If you have a good system, its likely going to be the quickest and most trouble free OS you have ever experienced. Its not 2002 anymore, 4gb MINIMUM nowadays, and seeing how cheap even 4GB of ram is compared to 2GB about 2 years ago, theres no reason not to.

Get a Vista lappy with a good GPU, CPU and as much ram and you will be fine. Buddy of mine just got a dell lappy, i forget the specs but i think its a 2.2ghz intel dual core with a GeForce 8800m and 4gb ram and Vista, says he has no graphical issues with Crysis whatsoever.

I bought my last computer from Xoticpc they are very good. I bought the NP5796. I have the 9800GTX with 4 gigs of ram. and the p9500 processor. The computer is awesome... with a little over clocking I have gotten over a 10,000 3Dmark06 score. I can run crysis almost at full settings. But crysis isn't a good game to judge graphics on since the graphics are so badly optimized. Crysis Warhead just came out and it is better optimized but its still not great. I would go with Vista but get the ultimate version. XP will use up less resources but you won't have a problem as long as you have 4 gigs of ram. COD4 you will have absolutely no problems running on max settings getting like 50 fps. If you want a little more portability you could go with the NP8660 but I have heard that the hard drives run hot in those so I would stay away from that.

1) Laptops are NOT ment to be gaming machines, All the components that gamers focus on (chip, vid card, etc) suck up power like theres no tomorrow. This kinda clashes against the laptops low power, long battery life design.

2) From looking at the options that company offers, you are gonna be paying a boatload of money to get something that runs cyrsis decently.

Reviews of the 9800GTX haven't been good, everyone was expecting it to be vastly better than the 8800GTX, and it most cases it was slightly better with a cheaper price tag. Even on medium settings the 9800GTX was only able to pull 40fps, granted this was the 512MB version and not the 1024MB version the is offered.

3) While I don't personally like vista nor do I run it on any of my computers you will need it to take advantage of DX10

Heres how I configured the laptop, now don't expect it to run crysis on high settings at 120 fps, but it will be a decent gaming laptop

I configured the NP9262 with the following changes

-selected the E8600 chip (core 2 duo 3.33GHz
-selected the 1024MB 9800GTX
-4 gigs of RAM
-320GB 7200RPM hard drive
-Vista Home 64bit (the site says it comes with the 32 bit version aswell)

final price is $2748.98
