I had been running Royal Purple Synchromax transmission fluid over the past five years with smooth shifts and no issues other than a little 2nd gear grind during the first shift on cold mornings, which was even worse with the original factory fill. Figured I would replace it with how hard I run my car since fluid is fairly inexpensive compared to the cost of a major mechanical failure. After much deliberation between Amsoil and Mobil 1 Synthetic ATFs, I selected Mobil 1 based on forum member recommendations, and it was available on the shelf at AutoZone.
Additionally, I purchased a Motive Power Fill after having difficulty finding a decent low cost fluid transfer pump that would fit Mobil 1 ATF quart bottles. While a little on the pricey side, I already had a Motive Power Bleeder that has served me well for many years, so I knew the quality was good. In addition to my Shelby, I have a couple of 4WD vehicles that I will replace transfer case and differential fluid in, so that was my justification for the cost of the new tool. I added 4 quarts of ATF to the fluid transfer pump and charged it to 15-20psi, and it filled my transmission right to the bottom of the fill hole without overflowing. Residual fluid that the pump could not push up to the transmission stayed in the hose and bottom of the pump tank, probably 1/4 - 1/3 of a quart. The best thing was no mess! Took my car out for a quick test drive in 70*F weather and shifting was smooth as expected.
I replaced my fuel filter also (every 15k miles) while I had my car up on Race Ramps. Spring maintenance complete… ready for the road!!!
