Hey guys,
Looking for some advice. In the 7 years I've had my car it has always smogged perfectly fine. Only mods are pulley and port. This time was the first time I had to take it to star station. Don't know if there is a difference, but when he hooked it up it couldn't collect any data and he couldn't run the smog. Said probably because of the custom tune. Take it home and back up the factory tune. Now its throwing a code. P0113 IAT sensor and P1000. I do the drive cycle and after 3 attempts both codes continue to come back each time. Do I need to keep trying at the drive cycle or is the code an indication that something is wrong. Does the port or pulley affect the factory tune. I would assume not. Anything else I should try? Thanks for any help.

so you're clearing the codes with the handheld tuner, and then they keep coming back?

Yup. And after the last drive cycle the light came on but the tuner said there were no codes. I drove it maybe 4 times and would plug it in and it would say no codes but the light stayed on. But after the 4th time the codes did pop back up.

With the P0113 code your monitors will not set. That code indicates a high IAT value which will effect emissions so the ecu will not run the monitor tests to clear the other code. I had a similar issue years ago and ended up having to replace my MAF (SOHC car only IAT sensor is in the MAF).

I would first disconnect the sensor and clean the pins and connector, clear the code and see if it comes back. If it does the IAT sensor may have simply failed. Yes it would be odd for it to happen now but it is possible.

You car didn't pass smog with your old tune because your tuner most likely turned off your cat monitor. This is a very common thing to do even with cars that are still running the stock exhaust. I actually sat on hold with SCT a few years ago when I was having problems only to find out that if the cat monitor is turned off in the tune NONE of the other monitors will even be tested let alone set by the ECU. After another round of emails with my now former dyno guy he turned my cat monitor back on and the next day the car passed no problem.

Most smog guys will tell you that the machine cant connect to the sate computer but in reality it can and the state computer is rejecting the car because of the lack of monitors. This is because you can get away with one (not including the cat monitor) being set. What happens is the computer says that those monitors are not supported and is then kicked back by the state.

So going back to your current issue. I would figure out what is happening with the IAT sensor and then your monitors will set. After you're done getting your smog done I would call your dyno guy, tell him to create another tune (very quick and easy) for smog that has your monitors turned on and just be prepared to load that tune up in two years.

I think the next step would be to test the intake air temp sensor with an ohmmeter to make sure it isn't faulty.

This is one of the few things I don't like about living in ca.

Best of luck with it!

I completely forgot about being able to test them like that. What is the value range for it again?

Do you have BT ODB adapter / Torque app or equivalent? Or SCT livewire s/w?
You can read IAT directly and see if it is expected.
