Wow you'd have to be a moron to do that... Doing survey work we'd have to open sewage covers some times to get some measurements and you have to stand back because the gases can make you pass out when you first open them.
H2S and CH4 are very flammable. we had to buy non sparking picks and sledge hammers to remove manhole covers
that was sick!
yep thats why OSHA requires anyone entering a confined space to test the air before opening the entry door or cover to a confined space, but a good rule of thumb if there is roaches coming out when you open the cover the gases are pretty low, but if your tape the cover and open it and there are no roaches let it breath for a bit.
