"Oil Slinger" installation on rear of crank HELP! ASAP!

OK, so the oil "slinger" that is installed on the crank before putting the rear main cover and seal on is what I have a question about.

The piece has an L shape to it, the part that is directly on the crank and then the other part of the L which is 90 degrees straight up, I guess it's like a gaurd to prevent oil pressure from reaching the rear cover.

Anyway, is that 90 degree part supposed to be installed closer to the MOTOR or closer to the COVER?

That's my question, please let me know ASAP!
