While cleaning my rims I found and removed a piece of metal from the middle of the tread (flat part). It was in about 7/16". The tires still have 2/16" tread. There is no leak. Not sure if this is just considered a surface wound. Is this tire still safe? I was hoping they would last 1 more season. Opinions?

Call me crazy but I ran my DR's with plugs in them for years. They'll hold fine its a radial. If you didn't puncture you're fine in my opinion.

I have run a shop for 10 years, with tires the primary item. It it did not puncture and its not on the sidewall you are good to go.

busted tires at Discount tire for 5 years, rule of thumb is if it didnt go deep enough to go into the metal lining of the tire then ur safe. but if it did go that deep normally repaired it

Thanks guys. I feel a little better. Not sure how deep is too deep, but it was probably 5/16" past the "groove" depth. I appreciate the responses!

If I had not pulled the wheels for cleaning today, it would've gone deeper!
