LIFE Magazine did a shoot at some drag races in "Moline, IL"...more than likely it was actually a few miles up river at Cordova Dragway given that it was already in operation by that point. There are 104 photos in the whole set. Some of the photos are reversed. The exact year isn't known, but we might get clues from the cars in the background. Probably around 1957.

--How did that timing system in the tower work?
--Were these the first images from Cordova?
--Was it truly a "track" in Moline...long since abandoned?
--Do the car clubs still exist? Wind Jammers, Gear Jammers, Slo-Pokes, Drag-Ons, Road Deacons,....
--Are any of the cars still around?
Here's a thread from the HAMB containing photos from the 1957 & 1966 World Series of Drag Racing from Cordova and the 1956 NHRA Nationals in Kansas City. A comparison of the WSoD photos with those from LIFE might tell us if the LIFE photos are of Cordova. I believe the WSoD moved to Cordova in 1955. The first ever, 1954, was at a local air strip IIRC?!?
