This may seem like a dumb question but my friend owns a 2002 ford explorer and I am trying to figure out what exactly is the difference between auto 4x4 and something like traction control. He says he does not have traction control but if he were to attempt to do a burnout his front tires automatically kick in to stop the rear from getting no traction. I am just trying to clarify what the difference is.

Thanx

auto 4x4 is just that.. auto 4x4.. when the vehicle starts to notice that the rear tires are spinning compared to the front, the transfer case starts to lock up, sending more and more torque to the front wheels.. till it's at a 50/50 split on the torque. (you probably noticed it has auto/4x4 high/4x4 low switch on the dash, that controls the transfer case)

traction control doesn't do that, but it will pull engine power and apply the vehicles brakes to limit wheel spin.
