My rear end has started to slowly whir/howl/whine this winter at speeds 45+.

So I'm guessing I'll need a rebuild in the next 6 months before I break something.

What all do I need?

LFP sells the ring and pinion gears and the installation kit.

What else on top of that do i need ?misc seals, bearings etc.
and obviously new lube for the rear end.

Depending on the level of rebuild you are wanting to do will call for different parts.

How old is your setup now? It could just be a carrier bearing going bad etc..

64k mile 2004 lightning. every day driver.

Would be kind of hard to hand it off to the shop to find out and order part, that'd take a week+.

if I do a nearly fully rebuild, gears, bearings etc I just wanna know which parts entirely so I could order them.

If it is a constant whine, most likely the ring gear. It was not uncommon and there was a Ford TSB on it. Most guys can't hear their gears whine over a louder than stock exhaust. Mine did a 13k. Bought new gears, bearings, seals, shims and added a Tru-Trac. My ring gear had developed a sharp edge alnong the teeth and I could hear it at cruise 55-65, ease on and offf the gas gently made it come and go, almost a subway sound.

I would suggest you use a rear end specialist with a easy return policy, order everything and return what you don't install. One other thing, it is a good time to change axle seals and check the axle bearings. I don't like having to do things more than once, do it right and be done, may cost a bit more, but peace of mind is well worth it.

Be sure the parts will work for a 9.75 Sterling for your model year.

Here is a link that can help you at any level.
