residue in oil

I just changed the oil in my 03 MM with 23k miles and found some residue particles in the bottom of the oil drain pan after pouring out the oil. I am not used to this occurring. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what the particles are?

What kind/color residue was it? Metal shavings? White foam?

they were small speckles, some about the size of grains of sand. they initially did not seem like metal shavings-I will recheck them. if the engine were not aluminum I could test with a magnet.

Do you still have some of the old oil? If so, you could send to a place like Blackstone Laboratories. For about $20 they'll do a full work-up on it for you, then you'll know for sure...
