Rusting part behind blower?

does anyone know what this part behind the blower is? I've had my car since Aug '14 and has only been kept outside maybe a week total

I believe that's the EGR valve assembly. Mine looks exactly the same FWIW.

It is the Exhaust Gas Recirculating Valve. Because it has to deal with the high temperatures of the exhaust, the main portion of the valve is made of cast iron. This makes it suspect to rust, especially if you live in a humid environment.

got painted struts, painted radiator cover and some other goodies coming for my engine bay. hopefully this wont be too bad of an eyesore

If it bothers you, take if off, hit it with a wire brush and shoot it with some header paint.
