maybe the cable is too tight

+1..do you have a firewall adjuster installed? If so how far in to you have it? Screw it into the firewall (CW) to make the pedal grab closer to the floor and loosen the cable. This will relieve the pressure off of the PP and increase clamping force while your foot is off the pedal (clutch engaged). If it's grabbing too high you're loosing all of your clamping force from the PP and that's why it slips.

Well then that sir is your problem. Go under your hood and screw that adjuster way in until it grabs off the floor and it won't slip.

I've got my adjuster screwed maybe 1/4'' from all the way and it grabs pretty close to the floor. Clutch holds for days.

That is kind of weird if it wasnt slipping before...firewall adjusters have been known to back out. Take a look and see where it is  Either way it shouldn't be grabbing at the very top of your pedal range.
