I'm heading down to Daytona next week and want to try a little pier/bank fishing while I'm there. I have never fished saltwater and have no idea what basic tackle I need to bring or how to target the fish down there. Does anyone have any tips for me to have a little fun and success while I'm there?

FWIW, I'm planning on bringing my catfish rod loaded with 17lb mono. I was thinking about taking an assortment of crankbaits, too.

17lb should be fine for peer area. The dunlawton peer (its in daytona) is usually pretty busy and there are always great guys there that can help. Most will throw live or frozen bait like squid, shrimp etc. You can catch everything from sharks, sheepshead, etc etc...ive even seen a few guys catch reds. There are usually very OVER fished though.

To get to really good fishing in my opinion...you need a boat. Not a lot of great salt bank fishing here. The jedi isnt bad. Its in ponce inlet which is maybe 5-10 miles south at most.
