Continuing where we left off from the previous thread "SN-95 4.6 Mustang History 1996-2000" and moving forward to finish up with the 2001-2004 model years. I would like to restate again..... I know that I will miss a lot of stuff and feel free to add some of the differences to the thread.

First part of the thread will consist of some standard spec stuff then it will be followed with "mechanical build" differences. I would like to keep this consolidated to GT models only....in regards to "mechanical build" differences.

The intent and progress flow of this thread is to outline changes from a previous year to the next. So, 2001 will be compared to 2000. 2002 will be compared to 2001...so forth and so on.

So, here we go....again

2001

2001 Mustang still remained unchanged with the exception of some styling cue's. Mustangs all carried the smoked headlamps that were found on the 2000 Cobra R's. A raised hood scope could be found on the GTs as well as side scoops that were found on the '99 35th Anniversary Limited Edition 'Stangs. The spoiler was also changed to form a more wing-like style.

The Manual Transmission was also changed for 2001. Replacing the T-45 with a TR-3650

Ford upgraded the center console by adding a larger rear cupholder and repositioning the front cupholder, power point, tissue holder and parking brake boot. The standard, deluxe and premium trim groups offer varying levels of standard and optional equipment, with the premium trim group being the most inclusive.

This is also the year, Ford decided to fix the Plastic coolant cross-over tube on the PI 4.6 intake to an aluminum cross-over tube. Sometime in mid 2001 this was changed.

Big news for 2001 was the release of the Bullitt Edition Mustang. exterior modifications including: unique side scoops, 17-inch Bullitt style aluminum wheels along with lowered suspension. A unique look is given off by the C-pillars and quarter panel molding as the car seems to hugtheroad below. A bold brushed-aluminum fuel filler door is placed on the quarter panel. Along with a Bullitt badge and polished exhaust tips.

Powering the Bullitt is a 4.6L SOHC V8, modified to increase airflow. The Bullitt engine produces at least 270 horsepower (spec is 265 hp), and shoves out much more torque than the standard GT Mustang. Modifications to the engine include twin 57 mm bore throttle body, cast aluminum intake manifold, high flow mufflers for increased power and an aggressive sound and an optimized alternator along with pump pulley ratios.

Bullitt's modified suspension creates a firm ride. The car is lowered 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) for a firmer, better balanced, ride along with improved handling capabilities. This performance-handling package also includes re-valved Tokico struts and shocks, unique stabilizerbar placed in both the front and rear of the car, and frame rail connectors. Excellent braking capabilities is generated from the 13-inch Brembo front rotors and performance callipers.

Found in the inside are performancebucket seats with Dark Charcoal leather trim. A brushed aluminum shifter knob, shifter bezel, and door sill plates are also very evident features. To finish off the performance design are aluminum pedal covers. The instrument cluster is a modern interpretation of the 1960s design found in the GT390, designed to offer unique curved numeric speedometer graphics and a white-lit background.

The 2001 Bullitt was offered in two other colors than the Dark Highland Green that Frank Bullitt chose. Also offered was the newly introduced true blue, as well as black. Total production for the Bullitt Mustang was 5,582, consisting of 723 true blue Bullitts, 1,818 black, and 3,041 dark highland greens

2003

2003 Mustang GT seemed to be left alone for the most part. Upgrade appearance options were added for the V-6 model. Even the V-6 model received the hood from the 1999 Cobra.

Not hard to see why the GT was basically left alone for 2003. Looks like all the focus went into bringing the 10th anniversary Cobra and Mach 1 to market for 2003

Mach 1 can be noticed anywhere with the return of the shaker hood scoop, while underneath the ram air scoop channels fresh air to the intake. Much like the Bullitt edition.

Highlights for the Mach 1 is a DHOC 4.6 at a little over 300 hp. Suspension was specific for that model and upgraded brakes.

Biggest news was the Cobra coming in with a Supercharged DOHC 4.6 codenamed "Terminator".

Cobra also had a 10th anniversary Supercharged DOHC 4.6 edition. featured unique 17x9-inch dark argent painted anniversary wheels, red leather seating surfaces in the front and rear, interior trim with the appearance of carbon fiber, red painted brake calipers, and SVT 10th Anniversary badges on the floor mats and rear decklid. SVT produced 2,003 units of the Anniversary model....(thought that was pretty cool....2,003 special edition Cobras in 2003.

We also had a Centennial Edition of the Mustang celebrating 100 years of Ford. This model only came in Black. Included Premium Verona-grain Imola leather seating surfaces in two-tone parchment, and the Mustang got the GT premium package, as well as 100th Anniversary badges on the fender and decklid and embossed on the seats. The Centennial Package was a $995 upgrade.

2004

2004 Mustang GT strikes another Annerviersy and will be the last of the New Edge body style. Celebrating its 40th birthday with a bang. It would appear that Ford has gotten real happy with Anniversary model cars at this point.

Other than it being the 40th Anniversary for the Mustang. Nothing else really happen in 2004 for the GT. We got a few 40th badges and thats about it. The Mach 1 stayed the same. Cobra stayed the same.

A special 40th Anniversary Edition of the Mustang was produced. As an $895 option available in both Standard and GT editions, coupe or convertible, it consisted of 40th Anniversary badging, enhanced interior with "40th Anniversary" floor mats, painted folding exterior mirrors from the Cobra models, a tan cloth convertible top (instead of canvas), Arizona Beige painted "Bullitt" wheels, and Arizona Beige stripes on the hood, trunk and lower bodysides. The anniversary package was available in Crimson Red (exclusive to package), Oxford White or black. Ford produced 4,558 Crimson Red models. Crimson Red, Ford paint code "FX", was also called Merlot on several other Ford models from 2002 through 2008 model years. All 40th Anniversary package cars came with Parchment (tan) leather interiors. Other than two pro-production units, all Crimson Red vehicles were built from August through November 2003. Forty-one of the Crimson Red cars were sent to Roush Industries for conversions into Roush Mustangs. It marked the end of this design of the Mustang.
