Spark Plug gap Question

What gap are you guys running on your plugs.
I looked at my Ford DVD manual, and it says .052 - .056 inch but under the hood, it states .042 - .046 inches.

Also, could someone explain to me the adv / disadv of running a smaller gap vs running a larger gap.

My stock plugs were .045, when I replaced them I gapped them at .055 (same time I had my Diablo chip installed). The wider gap gives a hotter spark......at least that is what I've been told.
