I'm going to be in South Africa for 18 weeks this upcoming April. What should I do about getting spending money? Will I be able to use my ATM card or should I scratch that since they'll charge me a crazy fee? Use Travel checks? Open checking account down there?

I know its not Africa, but Ive used my ATM card in more than a few places in Europe. If you do go this way, make sure you know the conversian rate is because youll be withdrawling their money.

I just usually pick up some traveler's cheques when I go out of the country if the country doesn't have a bank with a partnership with mine. Bank of America is pretty good with international usage. Look into what banks offer the best rate where you are for traveler's cheques, even though there is an exchange rate all banks are slightly different in their rates for exchange.
