Like most of these cars with untouched motors, and high mileage, I get a lovely puff of oil on hot start (and occasionally cold start). I'm set to do an oil change this weekend, and as I drive this car only occasionally, I was thinking about filling with royal purple or other high-dollar synthetic so I can stretch my oil changes intervals out further. How badly will this exacerbate the leaky valve seals?

It shouldn't make them any worse then they already are. I've ran Royal Purple before and didn't see any benefits over anything else. I'd stick with whatever you're currently running.
