I have seen up to 275 on a 17X8 in rim, but it does buldge out from the rim some. I run 255 on my 94 with the 17X8 and it looks fine.

I had 275's on my stock 17x8 rim. Don't have any pics, but they were Kuhmo's and they buldged pretty nicely. Always got compliments.

Sorry to hear of the "slashing". :(

i vote get some 03 wheels and 285/40 17's in the back, 275/40 17's in the front,
or better yet, get the 10.5" in the back and put 315 BFG DR's out back!

Don't forget the side wall is the main problem. I could NOT fit 255/40/17s on stock 97 Cobra wheels.

I have 275/40 17 bfg drag radials on my car and they look tough. I also picked up some spare stock rims and am having them widened to 10.5 so I CAN run the 315 DR's. we are on the same page quick01! hahaha. I like having the stock look with the not so stock bite!

What ever you do don't replace the old tires with comp t/a's. The last forever but they are to hard and there is no traction. I can swing the rearend out going into third gear without even trying

I have had 2 sets of comps, and they were ok. I like the look of the oem tire on these cars I got 1 set just waiting until one day when I go back stock so I have the correct tires ( I also do the old mustang thing and have learned the value of finding NOS parts, and these cars will be no different) but now its drag radials all the time because the car is scary to drive without them! and they match the sidewall on my comps.

I live up north in Amarillo..That's about 5 hours away from Denton..I have a cousin down there that's a probation officer in Dallas...And if the 285's are possible in the back,go for it...Go with 265's up front...,but no more than 275's up front...
